The European Cytoskeletal Forum (ECF) has been the academic forum for cytoskeleton research in Europe for the last 34 years.
The 32nd ECF meeting focuses on the biomechanically coupled continuum from the extracellular matrix to the plasma membrane and the nucleus. The cytoskeleton is intimately connected and influences the activities of, for example, the plasma membrane, cellular organelles and even the cell nucleus. In addition, significant crosstalk between the different cytoskeletal systems exists. The focus on the field has therefore shifted from analyzing individual cytoskeletal components to broader considerations of interactions between the different cellular compartments. In addition, sensing and responding to mechanical signals has emerged alongside chemical signals as a major instructive force for many cellular processes. These include for example cell growth, motility and differentiation. This topic is also medically highly relevant, since it has become clear that mechanical properties of tissues influence for example cancer progression.
The main aim of this lecture course is to provide the participants with an overview of the cytoskeletal interactions that mechanoresponsively connect the entire cell to a functional entity. This meeting will bring together international experts on cytoskeleton research from different disciplines, and give also young researchers plenty of opportunities to present their own work, both as short talks and in two poster sessions.
